Shopping Carts
Shopping Carts are software programs used on e-commerce websites to assist customers with making purchases online. In the USA, the term 'shopping cart' is the most common term to describe the feature, while in England, the term used for this program is generally "shopping basket", almost always shortned to the word 'basket'. Most ecommerce websites have a shopping cart, whether it be an integrated cart or a hosted cart.
An integrated cart would be when a merchant installs one of the carts below and then integrates the cart to the virtual terminal - never leaving the merchants website. A hosted shopping cart would just have links and allow the customers to pay on a 3 party websites.
The shopping cart software allows online customers to add items for purchase to their cart or basket as they click through an online store. Customers call this "placing items in the shopping cart", where they are allowed to "continue shopping" until ready. At checkout, the shopping cart usually automatically calculates a total for the order, including the necessary shipping and handling charges and any associated taxes. Merchants are able to set up all of these prices within the shopping cart - whether it be to run promotions such as "Free Shipping" or to change a tax rate.
