Merchant Accounts
Merchant accounts are the single most important way a merchant can accept payment. Most consumers do not carry large amounts of cash around, so the best means for a merchant to access these customers buying potential is through the acceptance of credit cards. One a merchant is tied into the credit card network, many new streams of income are opened up and the merchant is able to cater to a much larger audience. Merchants can now solict credit card payments from personal credit cards and also business cards.
Merchants have the ability to accept credit cards 2 different ways. The first being sales performed in person by the customer. These are known as Point Of Sale or POS. Generally the lowest risk transactions because the card is present. Another means of credit card acceptance is Mail Order/Telephone Order; also known as MOTO. This also include internet based transactions. Here the customer is not present at the retail location, but still able to make the transaction. More information is generally needed from the customer to conduct this successfully due to the increased risk.
For a merchant to set up a merchant account, the easiest way is to contact Keystone Bankcard and ask for an application. Though merchants do have the option to go to a local bank, banks are generally not as competitive as private merchant services companies. Banks usually do not have the wide selection or latest products to offer merchants to use in their stores or online businesses.
Once a merchant receives approval for their merchant account, they are integrated into the credit card processing network. Depending on the type of business that the merchant is conducting, this can be done through credit card terminals, virtual terminals or other types of credit card processing software. Merchants are not limited to using just one of these solutions, as it is common for merchants to have both instore and online credit card processing capabailities.
Once the merchant's terminal is set up on the credit card network, they can begin to accept payments. Credit cards payments through the terminal will either be approved or rejected in a fast process. If a card is approved, the merchant can release the merchandise and expect to see those funds settle in their bank account within 24-48 hours.
